Information "to lead or to learn?" Information exists in business for two purposes:
Each of these objectives requires different information, presented differently, and demands different audiences. Leading Information Leading information flows vertically, up through the organisation from subordinates to supervisors, to managers and is driven by the question: 'What information do we, as management, need to know to The leading information flows enable managers to understand the business and recognise areas of non-conformance. This allows management to take action to lead, direct and manage the business. Leading information supports business analysis, goal setting, development of KPIs and the whole concept of performance management. The reverse flow, in this system, consists of advice, instructions and directions to move the business from non-conformance to conformance. Leading information flows are concerned with: Driving the business goals through enhanced information. Learning information Learning information flows horizontally across the organisation between peer groups, functional areas and neighbours in the internal and external supply chains. This type of information is driven by the question: 'What information do we, as people, need to know to run Learning information consists of experiential data and methods of working or tools; techniques to run the business better through sharing "common good practice". The countervailing flow, in this system, consists of other people's experiences, methods and understanding to increase the sum of knowledge about how to avoid non-conformance. Learning information flows are about: Achieving the business goals through enhanced abilities. How can organisations achieve this? To maximise effectiveness, organisations have to achieve a balance between these two identified dimensions. The equilibrium between the "lead" and "learn" information creates the foundation of "informed action" by the whole organisation. Who can help? CHI Strategy has been set up to help organisations improve their business through understanding and delivering their future. An important component of this is the creation of leading and learning information flows, open, supportive cultures and an environment where people thrive.
